How message encryption works
Direct messages are encrypted on your device. WoodX cannot read them.
When both people have encryption set up, direct messages and their files are encrypted on the sender's device and decrypted on the recipient's. WoodX stores only the encrypted form and cannot read it. A lock next to a conversation means it is end to end encrypted.
What this means day to day
- Encryption is set up on each device the first time you open Messages.
- Previews in notifications and the conversation list say Encrypted message instead of the text.
- File names in encrypted conversations stay on your device.
- Search of encrypted messages happens on your device, not on our servers.
If a conversation says Not encrypted
The other person has not opened Messages on a device with encryption yet. New direct messages are encrypted once both of you have.
To read encrypted messages on a new phone or computer, back up your key first. See Back up your message key.
