Back up your message key

Your private key lives only on the device where you made it. Back it up with a passcode so you can unlock your encrypted messages somewhere else.

1. Open Settings, Profile, and find Message encryption.
2. Choose a passcode of at least 8 characters and choose Back up.
3. On your new device, open Messages and enter the same passcode to unlock.

The backup is locked with your passcode before it leaves your device, so WoodX cannot open it. If you forget the passcode, we cannot recover the key, and older encrypted messages stay unreadable on new devices. Update the backup whenever you change the passcode.
